Railfreight Sectors - Logo's & Sector Types
COAL Sector - The largest of the four
Railfreight Sectors with over 200 locomotives and
10,000 wagons. These were primarily involved with the transportation of
coal - in 'Merry-Go-Round' Wagon formations - from collieries. Locomotives were
mainly based at Toton, Cardiff Canton, Eastfield, Crewe Diesel & Swansea Landore
Depots. Class 58's were the largest group (some 50 locomotives)
followed by Class 56's, Class 37's (mainly allocated South Wales Depots) and
from 1990 Class 60's. Class 26's were used on shorter MGR Routes in
Scotland. One Named Class 08 ' Kidwelly' was attached to the South Wales Fleet.
Class 31's in this Sector were used for Nuclear Flask transportation.
CONSTRUCTION Sector - This
Sector centred around the movement of aggregates and cement involved in the
Construction Industries. Concentration of locomotives were in the Peak
District of Derbyshire, the Leicestershire Quarry areas, movement of stone from
the Mendips to the London & immediate district areas.
Flow Cement from Hope, again in Derbyshire and also near Dunbar. The construction of the Channel tunnel involved the Sector in the movement of pre-cast tunnel linings and stone to the construction are in Kent. Depots were Buxton(Tinsley), Eastfield, Immingham, Stewarts Lane, Stratford, Thornaby, & Toton, Classes involved in this Construction Livery were : Class 31, Class 33, Class 37, Class 47, Class 56 & Class 60. Of these Classes 47 & 60 were the largest with approximately 25 locomotives of each of those Classes.
Often in the London area Class 33's were double headed for Channel Tunnel work.
PETROLEUM Sector -
Transportation of Petrol & Chemical based products. This covered a
very large area of the UK using over 110 locomotives from groups - Class
31, Class 37, Class 47, Class 56(1 Only), Class 60 and the inevitable 1 x Class
08.
Operational Areas, in the main, were Immingham, Ellesmere Port & Stanlow, North
Thames, Grangemouth, West Wales. (Immingham had the Cl 08). Class
31's, Cl 37's & Cl 60's from Immingham, Cl 47's from Stanlow , Class
37's from Grangemeouth, Cl 37's & Cl 60's from West Wales. Depots were Crewe
Diesel, Cardiff Canton, Stratford, Immingham & Eastfield.
METALS & AUTOMOTIVE Sector - The
movement of the materials involved in the production of steel, its finished
product (sheet, plate, coil, wire & billets)(car parts, car bodies & completed
cars) were covered by this BR Sector together with iron ore & limestone to
Llanwern, Scunthorpe, Teeside & Ravenscraig. Class 37's were the
main types involved in the Sector, supported with
Cl 47, 56 & 60. Depots were Cardiff Canton, Eastfield, Immingham, Motherwell &
Thornaby. The largest Class involved were 47's, followed by Class37 and then
Class 56 & 60. A small number of Cl 20's were used in the early stages.
GENERAL Sector
- This Sector never really found a market to justify
the original intention, which was to cover Industrial & Commercial segments that
were not catered for as specialised subjects. From information we have
obtained only 3 locomotives were converted to this Livery - 1 x Cl 50 & 2 x Cl
86.
